2000 B.C. CHALLENGE CUP |
HISTORY
The Investors Group B.C. Challenge Cup was inaugurated during the 1978-1979 season by the late Bruce Allison, President of the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association in the Lower Mainland District, and Art Fisher, President of the Okanagan-Mainline Amateur Hockey Association, to provide a championship competition for "B" teams within the province of British Columbia. At that time the B.C. Amateur Hockey Association recognized only one provincial championship in PeeWee through Juvenile. Representative teams from smaller communities and second teams out of larger Associations had no championship competition beyond their own district.
In its initial seasons, the B.C. Challenge Cup was a best-of-three series between the Okanagan-Mainline and Pacific Coast winners. At that time only the larger southern districts were able to operate viable "B" leagues. In 1985 Vancouver Island began competition, and in 1989 the Challenge Cup became a true province-wide competition. Today, all eight districts send representatives.
With the addition by the BCAHA of the Double "AA" (1980-1981) and Single "A" (1987-1988) levels of competition, small and medium-sized Associations were able to enter their first team in the division on CHA cards. The Challenge Cup became a competition for District-carded teams entered behind a CHA-carded "AAA", "AA", or "A" team within their Association.
The B.C. Challenge Cup trophies are named in honour of three builders of the game of hockey in B.C. The late Roy Watt was a long time volunteer in the Kamloops area, Art Fisher was President of the Okanagan-Mainline AHA for a total of 18 years and is an OMAHA Life Member, and Stan Patience was PCAHA President for 8 years in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Both Art Fisher and Stan Patience are winners of the BCAHA Diamond Stick Award.
1999-2000 marks the 22nd season of competition for the B.C. Challenge Cup, and the fourth under the sponsorship and support of The Investors Group. Once again, exciting and entertaining hockey is expected in the playoffs to be hosted by Cowichan Valley MHA, Kamloops MHA, and Surrey MHA.
* Please note - As a result of changes in rules regarding B players now being CHA carded the Investor's Group Challenge Cup is no longer a PCAHA operated Tournament. We at the PCAHA would like to thank the Investors Group for their support of the Challenge Cup over the last number of years. Without sponsors such as the Investor's Group an event of this type is not possible to put on, so Thank You for your past support of this wonderful championship and we look forward to working with you again in a future endeavor, the PCAHA.CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY WINNERS
