 ANNUAL MIDGET SCHOLARSHIP TOURNAMENT

PHILOSOPHY AND FORMAT

A. General Philosophy:

The Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association hosts the annual Midget Scholarship Tournament to actively promote the ideals of scholastic achievement and sportsmanship combined with participation in Minor Hockey at the Midget level, and within this context to recognize the talents of graduating Midget players (17 years olds) in both the educational and athletic fields.

B. Coaching Selection:

Coaches and other team officials for the four Tournament teams have been selected by the PCAHA Special Events Committee on the basis of their philosophy of the game, past coaching record, and personality. No coach or other team official who has incurred a 10-min. Misconduct, Game Misconduct, Gross Misconduct, or Match Penalty during the current season was considered, and all coaches and assistant coaches are required to hold at least National Coaches Certification Program Coach Level certification (Intermediate Level preferred).

C. Player Eligibility and Selection:

Players meeting the Tournament’s participation criteria have been nominated by their club teams and have been invited to attend a number of tryout sessions from which the coaching staffs have selected the final teams. The basic player selection criteria are as follows:

(iii) Sportsmanship Requirement - Any player having incurred a Match Penalty or Gross Misconduct during the current season is ineligible for participation in the Tournament. In addition, players may be disqualified for excessive penalty minutes upon review of their penalty records.

(iv) Hockey Ability.

(v) Minimum Association Representation - A minimum of one player from each Association entering a Midget "A" team will be selected to the final Tournament teams, provided the Midget "A" team from that Association nominated players and the players attended the try-out session(s).

D. Tournament Format:

In keeping with the goal of encouraging participation in Minor Hockey, the 2000-2001 Tournament is being held in conjunction with Canadian Hockey Week, January 20-27, 2001. Two teams each will be selected from each of the two PCAHA Conferences, the Fraser Valley Conference and the Greater Vancouver Conference. These teams will participate in a four team single round-robin, with the 3rd and 4th place teams meeting in a placement game and the top two teams meeting in a championship final game.
