Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association
JUVENILE SCHOLARSHIP TOURNAMENT
HISTORY

The PCAHA Juvenile Scholarship Tournament was established in 1983 by Earle Sinkie, PCAHA Zone 1 and 2 Juvenile "A" Division Manager, and Ed Hanusiak, PCAHA Zone 3 Juvenile "A" Division Manager. Earle and Ed were looking for a means of giving players in the Juvenile Division some of the recognition that was otherwise lacking. In addition, they were hoping to increase participation by Juvenile players in the PCAHA Scholarship Program.

The successful format utilized by the PCAHA Midget Scholarship Tournament was adopted, and the first event was staged March 15-20, 1983, at various locations. Selected teams from the three PCAHA Zones played a single round-robin series with a championship final game, and the Zone 3 team prevailed as inaugural champions. The participating players and team MVP’s were subsequently honoured at a Juvenile Division awards banquet.

The three Zone format was utilized again in 1984 and 1985. Following the restructuring of the PCAHA in 1985, the Tournament adopted a provincial flavour with the addition of a team representing the Okanagan-Mainline Amateur Hockey Association. Teams from the PCAHA Fraser Valley Conference and Greater Vancouver Conference along with the Okanagan team participated in the 1986, 1987, and 1988 events.

With the decline of Juvenile hockey in the Okanagan, the Tournament returned to an all-Lower Mainland format for 1989. Participating PCAHA Associations were divided into Red, White, and Blue groups, and the three team round-robin/championship final format was retained.

In 1987, Earle Sinkie approached John Wright, National Manager of Marketing and Sales for Toyo Tire Canada Inc., with the suggestion that Toyo Tire become involved with the Tournament. Following discussions with Earle Sinkie and PCAHA Vice-President Howard LeTroy, Toyo Tire agreed to sponsor the Tournament and donate a scholarship and 3 bursaries to the PCAHA Scholarship Fund. Toyo Tire sponsored both the Tournament and the Scholarship Program for 10 years. For the 1997 event OK Tire Stores joined Toyo Tire as co-sponsors, but from 1998-2001 there was no sponsor. In 2002 Scotiabank became major event sponsor of the Tournament and continued in that role for 7 seasons until 2008.

The championship trophy, donated by the Tournament’s founding fathers, Earle Sinkie and Ed Hanusiak, has been won by:
